Manga109 consists of 109 volumes of manga drawn by professional Japanese manga artists for academic research on the media processing of Japanese manga. The author annotated text boxes, speech text, human faces and human bodies.

These manga were commercially available to the public between the 1970s and 2010s, covering a wide range of target readerships and genres. Most of the manga in the dataset can be found in the manga library "Manga Library Z" (formerly "Zeppan Manga Toshokan" Out-of-print Manga Library).
