Vibe-coding was coined in February 2025 by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former head of AI at Tesla, and was named Collins Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2025.
Vibe coding refers to writing code using natural language commands and AI assistance. Programmers describe the problems to be solved using prompts, which are then provided to a large language model (LLM) specifically for software development. The application's source code is generated by the LLM, and the programmer's job shifts from writing code to guiding the AI to generate, test, and optimize code. Vibe coding has become a mainstream working method for developers from beginners to experienced professionals, and is widely used in application development, prototyping, and other scenarios.
